A story was told of a
family that gave birth to a baby and invited friends and families to celebrate
with them. As the guests come in for the celebration, they kept dropping their
jackets on the couch because it was cold outside. Whenever anybody came into
the house, he or she either hangs or drop the jacket and goes off shouting in
celebration of either meeting a long lost friend or relative, and so the
celebration continues.
At a point, someone asked,
where is the baby we came to celebrate? Alarmed by that question everybody
began to search for the baby. Suddenly, the mother remembered she laid the baby
on the couch. As she rushed to lift off all the jackets on the couch, alas the
baby has suffocated and died. What a tragedy! The reason for their celebration
is dead because they did not pay attention.
Unfortunately, most of
us are in this picture. We are so engrossed in the activities; shopping,
dresses, foods, visitations, carols, even farther Christmas and all that comes
with celebration of Christmas that we forget the essence of the celebration. We
have even gone to the extent of representing the ‘Christ’ in the Christmas with
an unknown ‘X’ and we write xmas. What a way of suffocating the baby.
With this attitude, we
are not any different from King Herod that wanted to kill the baby Jesus and
remove the essence of our celebration. Matt. 2:16. Glory be to God that it did
not happen.
As we celebrate this
season, let us keep remembering that JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON!
