STEPS TO ignite
spiritual thirst and THE benefits
STEP 1.
DESIRE IT
If anyone thirsts for God ... Mathew 7:37a
These statements induces
that anybody can have a relationship with God (that is not just some selected
individuals but all who care to have HIM). You can desire to have God no matter
whether you are poor, rich, educated, uneducated, jobless, orphan, no matter
your status you can seek God and certainly find Him. Mathew 5:6, john 4:14, John 6:35, Revelation 22:17.
§ Taking a look at John
7:37
In John 7:37 we would note that Jesus was
speaking during the feast of tabernacles. This was a high happy, holy day in
the life of the Jew. The feast was like the combination of Christmas, Easter, and
thanksgiving. Merriness everywhere at high pitched. It was right at this climax
of this great holiday that the lord stood up in that crowd and with that royal
voice "if anyone thirst let him come and drinks". Jesus realized that
people were drinking from polluted well and from the river of ritual.....that
after this day was over they would go back to the same old fears, same old faults,
same old mistakes, same old failures and frustrations. What was wrong with that crowd that day is
what is wrong with many believers today, quenching their thirst from wrong
wells. We drink from the wrong places instead from the well of life which is found
in Christ.
In psalm 63 the psalmist cried out from his
soul how much he desire God, if truly we want to have that relationship we long
to have with God then we have to pour the whole of our being into seeking
earnestly for God.
There is an
ancient tale from India about a young man who was seeking God.
He went to a wise old sage for help. “How can I find
God?” he asked the old man. The old man took him to a nearby river. Out they
waded into the deep water. Soon the water was up just under their chins.
Suddenly the old man seized the young man by the neck and pushed him under the
water. He held the young man down until the young man was flailing the water in
desperation. Another minute and he may well have drowned. Up out of the water
the two of them came. The young man was coughing water from his lungs and still
gasping for air. Reaching the bank he asked the man indignantly, “What did that
have to do with my finding God?” The old man asked him quietly, “While you were
under the water, what did you want more than anything else?” The young man
thought for a minute and then answered, “I wanted air. I wanted air more than
anything else?” The old man replied, “When you want God as much as you wanted
air, you will find him.
Let’s look into the adventure of Solomon in Ecclesiastes 4
Solomon
considered the wisest and richest man in the bible gave this personal
testimony. He tried drinking from the polluted wells of this world, trying to
find satisfaction and truly he tried it all:
He tried
wildness: he thought in
his heart. I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good, but it all
prove foolishness, for what does pleasure accomplished vs 1-2....he became a playboy and no work, and he
was still not satisfied.
He tried wine: He tried cheering himself up with all kinds of wine but found out that
wine didn't do him any good.
He tried
wealth: He acquired
male and female servants, gold and silver and treasures but his eyes were not
filled.
He tried
woman: He acquired 700 wives and 300 concubines
and along with that came 700 mothers-in-law, you can imagine the trouble.
He then tried
wisdom and only then did he realized that all
things are futile, foolish and vanity without God.
Only when he
desire God did he find peace, so you too can desire HIM and see how good HE is.
STEP 2: Meditate through the scriptures JOSHUA
1:8
STEP 3: Pray through the scriptures
The benefits are endless but in a nutshell
you will thoroughly be satisfied and just like Paul you will have the grace of
thirsting for God the more.
CONCLUSION
If you are
tired of living without a spiritual passion for God, if you are tired of going
through the circle, knowing deep down inside you that you are spiritually dying
or dead. The lord invites you this morning to come to Him for spiritual
refreshments.
His words are
clear and simple, if anyone is thirsty let him come and drink. Are you thirst
for God, are you thirsty for a victorious life? Come to Jesus and drink and HE
will make you a river of flowing waters.
